Changes to Northamptonshire lights switch-off plan after complaints

29/09/2011
Northamptonshire County Council have been contacted by 1,645 residents with complaints relating to its street lights switch-off move which will see half the county’s street lamps turned off.

Nearly 400 alterations have been made to original plans following the complaints.

The council has revealed that 1,645 people have so far contacted its engineers to raise concerns about specific lights. The council has so far processed 1,142 complaints and, as a result, made 375 changes to its original plan.

A spokeswoman said: “It means that, where appropriate, when one light was switched back on as a result of a resident’s concern, another was switched off in that area.

“There was no change in the amount of money the council aims to save with this scheme.”

The scheme, which will see around half of the county’s street lighting switched off and its current £4 million per year energy bill halved as a result, was approved in February this year.
