After months of wrangling, final approval has been given for a laser light display on Weymouth seafront.

The Veils of Light scheme is now set to be turned on by next February.

As part of the agreement for the lights scheme to go ahead, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council have had to confirm to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency that it will not interfere with search and rescue operations.

The council has agreed that the lights will be turned off if the coastguard helicopter is required to perform a sea rescue.

The lights display will comprise seven columns of different colours, varying in height from 14 to 15 metres tall, which will stand along the promenade, projecting green laser lights downwards at angles a few hundred metres into the sea.

The lights, which will be computer-controlled, will operate during the evening but will be turned off at night. Read More...

Tips to lighting a small kitchen

A small kitchen can be a challenge to light, particularly if there are no windows letting in natural light.

Shadows and dark corners can make a small kitchen appear even smaller so they should be avoided. If your kitchen is well lit, it will appear larger.

You can even make ceilings appear higher by hanging pendant lights.

Selection recessed lighting will also make your kitchen look more attractive and inviting.

If your kitchen has no windows at all, you will need some bright lighting. Install lights under the cabinets, for example, to give your kitchen a more welcoming feel.

When considering the décor of your small kitchen, opt for lighter colours as dark colours can make your kitchen appear even smaller than it really is. Read More...

Enhancing décor with electrical switches and plate designs

Good quality electrical switches and plate designs can enhance the décor of any room. Many also have additional features such as dimmer switches or dual switches and can come in a variety of finishes, including chrome and brass.

As well as stocking a large variety of the above, websites such as www.socketsandswitches.com also offer more unusual designs, including a selection to appeal especially to children.

The simplest way to enhance the appearance of your electrical switches and outlets is to install new plate covers. Since most electrical components are made to a standard size, almost any plate design will fit.

Whenever you work near electrical wiring or fixtures, always make sure you turn off the electricity supply first. Changing an electrical switch face plate is very simple task but you may accidentally touch a lire wire and it is always better to ensure the area is entirely safe.

It is usually best to replace switches at the same time as new plate designs as they will match the plate better. Read More...

Factors to consider when choosing bathroom lighting

When choosing the correct type of lighting for your bathroom, there are several factors to consider.

You need suitable illumination around mirrors and in areas where visibility is important but you may also want to create some mood lighting for that long soak in the bath at the end of a hard day.

Wall sconces can be installed around mirrors, providing shadow-free light effects for grooming and shaving.

Ceiling light fixtures provide overall light and recessed down lights or track lighting is useful for illuminating specific areas.

If you want to create a calming ambience and mood lighting in your bathroom, install a dimmer switch (outside your bathroom). You can then adjust your bathroom lighting accordingly. Read More...

Children spend more time in their bedroom than anywhere else in the house and dimmer switches can really help in creating a sanctuary that promotes restfulness and sleep.

Harsh lighting in a child’s bedroom is usually a bad idea as experts believe that excessive light inhibits the release of melatonin in the brain. Melatonin is essential for sleep.

Install a dimmer switch in your child’s bedroom and you will be able to control the level of light yourself ensuring that, when it comes to bed time, your child will understand that it is time for sleep.

It is also a good idea, as children get older, to let them have a say in the décor of their room. Read More...

A total of 1,645 residents have contacted Northamptonshire County Council with complaints relating to its street lights switch-off move which will see half the county’s street lamps turned off.

Nearly 400 alterations have been made to original plans following the complaints.

The council has revealed that 1,645 people have so far contacted its engineers to raise concerns about specific lights. The council has so far processed 1,142 complaints and, as a result, made 375 changes to its original plan.

A spokeswoman said: “It means that, where appropriate, when one light was switched back on as a result of a resident’s concern, another was switched off in that area.

“There was no change in the amount of money the council aims to save with this scheme.”

The scheme, which will see around half of the county’s street lighting switched off and its current J4 million per year energy bill halved as a result, was approved in February this year. Read More...

A unique lighting installation was created by BDP for the annual Maggie’s London Night Hike.

The lighting firm created the interactive light installation at Horse Guards Parade for the September 16 event. Colour-change fixtures were used to uplight the architecture of the long archway leading through to the courtyard.

The lighting effects were connected to a control system and microphone which were programmed to react and change according to the sounds made by hikers as they passed through the tunnel.

The courtyard was also filled with hundreds of white helium balloons which were each illuminated with a single LED light. The hikers then wrote messages on the balloons which were released at the conclusion of the walk. Read More...

Outdoor lighting is being featured at this year’s Grand Designs Live at Birmingham’s NEC, where visitors can view a 24-hour garden theme complete with modern garden carpets and outdoor rugs.

The outdoor lighting and heating solutions are part of The 24-Hour Garden, a display showing visitors how they can use their garden as extra entertaining and living space all year round.

TV garden designer James Alexander-Sinclair, who will be at this year’s show, says: “The point of 24-hour gardening is not so much sitting in it but looking at it. You can sit in your sitting room and power a switch and there you have it.”

“Lighting certainly extends the life of the garden as seasons change, so you are not just looking at plants but the effect of light on plants when planning your garden for the year.

“You can sit there with the fire blazing and, if you light your garden properly, you can see all the skeletons and shadows of your garden, which extends the life of your garden, as does a pond with a fountain with a light in it.”

Grand Designs Live is being staged at Birmingham’s NEC from October 7-9. Read More...

Lighting for the bedroom requires careful thought as it is important that your bedroom provides you with a haven from the stresses of life.

Your choice of lighting will allow you to create the right mood for your bedroom.

In selecting the right fixtures, consider the décor. Brightly-coloured walls will require less light than darker colours.

Fixtures to choose from include wall lights, lamps, chandeliers, lights with fans, recessed lights and decorative track lighting. Your choice will be affected by whether you use your bedroom simply to relax and sleep or whether it is a multi—functional room where you also need to study or work. Task lighting will be required for a desk and a good choice would be a swing arm wall lamp that allows you to direct the light where you require it.

Swing arm lamps are also useful for bedside lighting, particularly if you do not want to disturb a partner whilst reading.

Ensure that dressing areas are well lit and consider dimmer switches if you want the option of altering the ambience of your bedroom. Read More...

Home owners often install outdoor lighting for security purposes but it can also be added to highlight the design and look of your home.

Exterior lighting that highlights the home, gardens, lawns and patios can make the simplest of homes look more attractive.

One area to consider for security lighting is the garage. Ensure your garage will light up when movement is detected by installing a sensor system.

Outdoor lights are also practical for the entryways of your house. Front entrance lighting should be both functional and aesthetic.

You can transform dull, back gardens, yards, decking and patios with strategically placed light fixtures.

Crime prevention officers in Northern Ireland are advising home owners to consider outdoor lighting to make their homes more secure.

Increasing scrap metal thefts across North Antrim and other parts of Northern Island have prompted the crime prevention advice.

A police spokesman said that, with scrap metal fetching almost record prices, thefts had increased dramatically in the last six months.
Judith Lavery, Crime Prevention Officer for Balymoney and Moyle, said vacant houses were often a problem.

“It is always ideal to try to make your property look occupied as much as is reasonably practical,” she said.

““Good outdoor lighting can be an extremely effective tool to deter and detect a potential thief. Internally it is a suggestion to use timer switchers to turn on lights or even radios when darkness falls.

“Keep curtains open in daytime as by closing them you are drawing attention to the fact the house is empty. By following this simple advice you can create an environment which can deter a criminal,” she added. Read More...

Lighting outdoor living space

As the colder weather draws closer and the days become shorter, outdoor living spaces tend to be abandoned. However, with a bit of thought and the use of clever lighting and a heater, areas such as patios can still be enjoyed.

Outdoor lighting can be grouped into four areas; ambient lighting, job lighting, accent lighting and security lighting.

Ambient lighting can be described as general lighting of the main area you wish to illuminate, providing pleasant and ample light at wide angles. It should be installed in the primary area of the garden, such as a patio, where it is most likely that you will want to spend your time.

Task lighting provides illumination for specific activities and can be installed in barbecue or games areas. Accent lighting is used to highlight specific objects within the garden, such as ornaments and plants, to add character to outdoor living space. A simple uplight on a garden wall can create interesting shapes of light.

Security lighting has a more practical use, whether it be for added protection for the home or to provide light for paths and walkways. Security lighting generally comprises a floodlight and photocell or sensor which will automatically turn on when it detects movement. Read More...

Raytec Infra-Red LED lighting technology is being used to provide 24-hour CCTV surveillance at the historic Tunnel Dam, in Missouri, USA.

The RAYMAX Infra-Red light is being used as an alternative to white light because the dam is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and designers wanted to avoid light pollution.

The system has been installed by Will Electronics to improve security and safety at the site, with Raytec’s Infra-Red lighting providing a high-performance, cost-effective solution.

The firm’s series of wide angle illuminators illuminate the area up to 1200 feet away. The units allow the cameras to take clear images at night but, because the Infra-Red light is invisible to the human eye, the area appears completely dark. Read More...

Mood lighting is becoming more significant when it comes to lighting design as scientific studies continue to indicate that the influence of different colours can affect mood.

It was discovered a few years ago that the introduction of blue mood lighting in a number of streets in Glasgow reduced the level of crime.

Chromotherapy, a type of alternative medicine, is based on idea that different coloured lights can have different effects on health.

When selecting mood lighting for your home, bear in mind that blue is thought to promote feelings of safety and calm, green represents earth, spring and youth, yellow happiness and red passion, speed and action.

Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, LED lighting can encompass a broad spectrum of colour, which makes them ideal for use as mood lighting. Read More...

With lighting accounting for up to 20 per cent of the average household electricity bill, it is important to get it right and switch to low energy lighting if possible.

UK building regulations now state that when it comes to new builds and extensions to existing properties, one in four habitable rooms must have low energy lighting.

If you are looking to install lighting yourself, you need to know the size of hole you need to cut out to suit the type of fitting you have chosen. The hole you cut out must be large enough for you to be able to check for any obstructions.

When installing a new light fitting, make sure that you take into account fire and building regulations.

If you have low ceilings, use semi-flush ceiling lights rather than pendant lights with chains or suspensions. Read More...

If you have faulty electrical switch, it is always best to call in a professional with the proper electrical knowledge.

Common problems relating to light switches include tripped circuit breakers and burned-out fuses. Before deciding to replace an electrical switch you believe is faulty, always check your circuit breaker box first. It may be that your circuit breaker box simply needs resetting. Likewise, your switch problem may well be solved with a replacement fuse.

However, just as with any fixture, your electrical switch can simply break. If flipping the switch has no impact on your light fixture or your switch simply won’t hold, it may need to be replaced. If this is the case, it is best to call in a qualified electrician and check out www.socketsandswitches.com
Read More...

Residents of Oakland, California, are claiming that a reduction in street lighting has led to an increase in crime.

Street lighting restrictions requires the city to begin to use energy-efficient bulbs and cap new lamp posts to stop light from flooding the sky.

However, homicides in the city are up to 85 so far this year, an increase of 25 per cent on last year.

Now residents, who include pastor Zachary E. Carey, have launched a campaign against the light restrictions.

Mr Carey said: “It’s real easy to hide when it’s dark everywhere.

“How do you prevent crime when people know you can’t see them?”

Prior to budget cuts in 2007, Oakland police and city officials requested temporary lighting increases in major crime spots and Howard Jordan, the city’s assistant police chief, said a permanent increase could help reduce crime levels.

“Most of these crooks, when they commit a crime, want to do it in darkness,” he said. Read More...

Scientists in Australia have found the solution to an overwhelming cane toad problem – ultraviolet lights.

Researchers in Queensland have discovered that the females of the species, that have been plaguing large areas of the country, can be lured into traps with a combination of ultraviolet lights and the sound of the male toad call.

Numbers of the toads caught in traps have increased tenfold since the discovery.

Cane toads, who have poisonous glands in their skin, are toxic to the animals that eat them, including birds and dogs. Read More...

A warning has been issued to householders in Bristol to check that their electrical appliances and sockets and switches are safe.

One person a week dies in the UK as a result of an electrical accident in the home and one person in eight has had a serious electrical shock.

Yet Danny Hancock, of Bristol-based firm Optus Electrical, says that many continue to put themselves at risk because their home electrics are outdated.

He states that 30-40,000 homes in Bristol do not have adequate RCD (residual current device) protection.

RCD fuse boxes can save lives by protecting against electrical shocks and lowering the risk of electrical fires.

"We all use electrical appliances daily and it's natural to want to solve simple electrical faults, but please get your electrical system professionally checked,” Mr Hancock says.

For safety around the home, don't use any appliances, lighting and switches that are faulty or visibly damaged.”

He also suggests that people should consider fitting RCD protection. Read More...

With the current slump in the housing market, mortgageloan.com is advising home owners wishing to sell their properties to consider installing new lighting.

Mortgageloan.com’s Kirk Haverkamp says there are a number of inexpensive changes that vendors can make to their homes, including fitting new ceiling lights.

Mr Haverkamp says: "If you're going to try to increase the value of your home, you want to choose home improvement projects that provide a good return on your investment.

“One relatively cheap improvement consumers could opt for is to install new ceiling lights which can make a big impact to the look of a home and help make it appear instantly more modern.

“For example, homeowners could install chrome ceiling lights for an ulltra contemporary look, or perhaps crystal chandeliers for a luxurious feel.

"You can go around and upgrade various items around the house for a more contemporary appearance - plumbing fixtures, lights, ceiling fans, doorknobs, curtain rods and curtains," he added. Read More...

Lighting specialists in Japan are in a race to respond to increased demand for LED products following the earthquake and tsunami in March.

Electricity-saving restrictions imposed as a result of the earthquake have led to huge demand for LED options, with manufacturers working to expand their selection of products.

In August, Hitachi Appliances Inc. introduced the company's first LED ceiling light which will go on the market in October. LEDs accounted for just 3 percent of the ceiling light market before the quake but this has now increased to 15 percent.

Toshiba Lighting and Technology Co. is also releasing two waterproof light bulbs later this month, aimed at the outdoor market. Read More...

Oxfordshire County Council has done a U-turn on plans to switch off thousands of street lights.

The decision to reverse the switch-off move was made following a discovery that electricity tariff changes would mean anticipated savings would not be achieved.

The plan would have meant that half the county’s streetlights would have been switched off between 12.30am and 5.30am.
Council spokesman Paul Smith said: “The proposed changes to the way councils will be charged by energy providers will have a negligible effect on overall budgets as the charges for peak times have been raised.

“These will be offset by the new lower rates for lighting during off peak periods.”

The council had hoped to save J350,000 by switching off 28,000 streetlights. Read More...

Recent research has predicted that LEDs will represent 40 per cent of the lamp market in two years time but that sales will decrease by 2018.

The report, by the US consultancy IMS research, predicts that, due to the long life and efficiency of LEDs, the LED market will shrink as more are installed.

The research states that the growth rate for LED lamp shipments from 2009-2015 is likely to be 97 per cent but that it will slow to 13 per cent from 2015 to 2020.

The report also points out that, if manufacturers are to succeed in the industry, they will need to enter the market sooner rather than later. Read More...

Ways to reduce your lighting bills

With energy bills forever on the rise and 20 per cent of the typical energy usage being taken up by illuminating the home, it is sensible to look at ways of reducing your lighting costs.

Firstly make sure you pick energy-efficient bulbs. Low-energy bulbs can last ten times as long as traditional ones and save up to 75 per cent on energy costs.

Turn off the lights when you leave a room. The exception to this rule is if you are using fluorescent bulbs and you plan to return within a few minutes as frequent turning on and off can reduce their lifespan.

If there is a need to leave a light on but not continuously, consider installing a timer. Then you will never have to worry about remembering to turn out the lights.

Installing dimmer switches not only lets you control the mood in any room but it can also save cash and extend the life of the bulb. However, make sure that your bulbs are intended for use with a dimmer switch.

When appropriate, consider motion sensors. This way, lights come on when motion is detected and turn off when no activity is detected over a selected period of time. Motion sensors are often used for security lights outside but can also be installed indoors. Read More...

A council has been criticised by lighting experts for leaving its own headquarters floodlit whilst it switches off street lighting.

Northamptonshire County Council is in the process of switching off 33,000 street lights to save J2 million a year and has undergone criticism for leaving its own headquarters floodlit.

Now the attacks have been backed by the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP), which represents workers in the UK lighting industry.

ILP member Nigel Parry told Lighting Magazine: “The example of the council’s floodlit building and car park just indicates that the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.

“The cost of a few floodlights to illuminate County Hall will not make any difference to the J2 million savings but the county could have looked at switching off these less critical locations before considering the routes that young people use to walk home a night.”

He added that the council should consider dimming street lights during the night rather than switching them off altogether.

He said: “We would remind authorities looking at switching off their street lights that the road lighting was initially installed for good reason and that switching them off is very likely to have implications.” Read More...
