Seafront laser light display finally approved

After months of wrangling, final approval has been given for a laser light display on Weymouth seafront.

The Veils of Light scheme is now set to be turned on by next February.

As part of the agreement for the lights scheme to go ahead, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council have had to confirm to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency that it will not interfere with search and rescue operations.

The council has agreed that the lights will be turned off if the coastguard helicopter is required to perform a sea rescue.

The lights display will comprise seven columns of different colours, varying in height from 14 to 15 metres tall, which will stand along the promenade, projecting green laser lights downwards at angles a few hundred metres into the sea.

Changes to lights switch-off plan after complaints

A total of 1,645 residents have contacted Northamptonshire County Council with complaints relating to its street lights switch-off move which will see half the county’s street lamps turned off.

Nearly 400 alterations have been made to original plans following the complaints.

The council has revealed that 1,645 people have so far contacted its engineers to raise concerns about specific lights. The council has so far processed 1,142 complaints and, as a result, made 375 changes to its original plan.

A spokeswoman said: “It means that, where appropriate, when one light was switched back on as a result of a resident’s concern, another was switched off in that area.

“There was no change in the amount of money the council aims to save with this scheme.”

The scheme, which will see around half of the county’s street lighting switched off and its current J4 million per year energy bill halved as a result, was approved in February this year. Read More...

Interactive light installation for London event

A unique lighting installation was created by BDP for the annual Maggie’s London Night Hike.

The lighting firm created the interactive light installation at Horse Guards Parade for the September 16 event. Colour-change fixtures were used to uplight the architecture of the long archway leading through to the courtyard.

The lighting effects were connected to a control system and microphone which were programmed to react and change according to the sounds made by hikers as they passed through the tunnel.

The courtyard was also filled with hundreds of white helium balloons which were each illuminated with a single LED light. The hikers then wrote messages on the balloons which were released at the conclusion of the walk. Read More...

Outdoor lighting featured in 24-hour garden

Outdoor lighting is being featured at this year’s Grand Designs Live at Birmingham’s NEC, where visitors can view a 24-hour garden theme complete with modern garden carpets and outdoor rugs.

The outdoor lighting and heating solutions are part of The 24-Hour Garden, a display showing visitors how they can use their garden as extra entertaining and living space all year round.

TV garden designer James Alexander-Sinclair, who will be at this year’s show, says: “The point of 24-hour gardening is not so much sitting in it but looking at it. You can sit in your sitting room and power a switch and there you have it.”

“Lighting certainly extends the life of the garden as seasons change, so you are not just looking at plants but the effect of light on plants when planning your garden for the year.

Lighting firm supplies BBC Northern Ireland Proms event

Moving lights plus special LED effects lighting were supplied to the recent 2011 Proms in the Park in Northern Ireland by Production Services Ireland (PSI).

The Proms event is BBC Ireland’s biggest event of the year and was one of four regional concerts linked live to the coverage of the Last Night of the Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

It was the second year that PSI was involved in the event as an equipment supplier. The show was staged at Castle Park, Bangor, and featured the Ulster Orchestra plus special guests.

Dancers light up ‘America’s Got Talent’

NBC show ‘America’s Got Talent’ was wowed last week by dancer Miral Kotb and her light-dance troupe Team iLuminate, with a wireless lighting system worn by the dancers as part of the act.

The technology was the brain child of Miral Kotb who combined her two main passions of dance and software development to create the lighting system.

Solar-powered lights for prehistoric project

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has paid a visit to a prehistoric project at a Sheffield school which has involved the creation of a replica Iron Age round house.

The Deputy Prime Minister was at St Wilfrid’s RC Primary in Millhouses to officially open the house which was built with help from volunteers from Heeley City Farm and Sheffield University.

The round house is already being used by pupils as an outdoor classroom for their environmental studies, although lighting is currently a problem as the building does not have any windows.

“We’re looking at installing small solar-powered lights so the atmosphere of the round house is maintained,” said head teacher Barbara Jarrett.

“The work was only just completed before Nick arrived but he was very impressed with what he saw - he said they didn’t do things like this when he was at school.

“It’s been a brilliant project and we are expanding our environmental work with our refurbished school pond and a forest school project,” she added.

Awards ceremony recognises lighting designers

The fourth Knight of Illumination Awards, which recognises the work of UK lighting designers, recently took place in London.

The event, organised by The Society of Television and Lighting Design, The Association of Lighting Designers and Clay Paky, celebrates achievements in touring, television and theatre lighting design.

Award winners included Simon Butcher, for the TV drama Casualty, Roger Williams for Tonight’s the Night and Matt Carter for ITV Daybreak.

Nick Whitehouse was recognised for the last Kylie tour and Jamie Thompson for The Script's current tour.

Richard Pilbrow received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of a lifetime as a lighting designer, from the West End in the 1950s to the new National Theatre and beyond.

Outdoor lighting advised to deter thieves

Crime prevention officers in Northern Ireland are advising home owners to consider outdoor lighting to make their homes more secure.

Increasing scrap metal thefts across North Antrim and other parts of Northern Island have prompted the crime prevention advice.

A police spokesman said that, with scrap metal fetching almost record prices, thefts had increased dramatically in the last six months.
Judith Lavery, Crime Prevention Officer for Balymoney and Moyle, said vacant houses were often a problem.

“It is always ideal to try to make your property look occupied as much as is reasonably practical,” she said.

““Good outdoor lighting can be an extremely effective tool to deter and detect a potential thief. Internally it is a suggestion to use timer switchers to turn on lights or even radios when darkness falls.

Infra-Red lighting installed at dam

Raytec Infra-Red LED lighting technology is being used to provide 24-hour CCTV surveillance at the historic Tunnel Dam, in Missouri, USA.

The RAYMAX Infra-Red light is being used as an alternative to white light because the dam is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and designers wanted to avoid light pollution.

The system has been installed by Will Electronics to improve security and safety at the site, with Raytec’s Infra-Red lighting providing a high-performance, cost-effective solution.

French sockets and switches firm Shneider Electric is planning to appoint 4,000 retail outlets across India.

The company recently announced its entry into the retail sector with the launch of switches, sockets and distribution systems.

After launching in Hyderabad and Pune, the entry into the Tamil Nadu market was commenced with the launch of ZENcelo and Vivace range of switches and the NeoBreak distribution systems.

"We are extremely pleased to enter into the Tamil Nadu market with a diverse range of products that target the home and SMB segments,” said Schneider Electric Managing Director Olivier Blum.

“A high level of education and awareness in Tamil Nadu has led to a relatively large customer base that expects world class quality, service and aesthetics at an affordable price,” he added.

Lighting design at Liverpool show

The work of lighting designers will be featured at this year’s Liverpool Design Show, to be staged from October 6-9.

To be held in St George’s Hall, the show will display the work of around 80 independent designers, including lighting designers, and is expected to draw a crowd of 5,000 visitors.

Included in this year’s list of exhibitors is Curiousa and Curiousa. Designer Esther Patterson will be showing her elegant lamps and lighting fixtures made from hand blown glass and bone china.

Dimmed lights blamed following crime rise

Residents of Oakland, California, are claiming that a reduction in street lighting has led to an increase in crime.

Street lighting restrictions requires the city to begin to use energy-efficient bulbs and cap new lamp posts to stop light from flooding the sky.

However, homicides in the city are up to 85 so far this year, an increase of 25 per cent on last year.

Now residents, who include pastor Zachary E. Carey, have launched a campaign against the light restrictions.

Mr Carey said: “It’s real easy to hide when it’s dark everywhere.

“How do you prevent crime when people know you can’t see them?”

Prior to budget cuts in 2007, Oakland police and city officials requested temporary lighting increases in major crime spots and Howard Jordan, the city’s assistant police chief, said a permanent increase could help reduce crime levels.

Almost half of Welsh councils switch off street lights

Almost half of councils in Wales have switched off residential street lights to save cash.

Bridgend is the latest to announce its switch-off plans after energy bills reached J826,000 last year.

Ten out of the 22 councils in Wales have already turned off street lighting in cash-saving moves.

A Bridgend council spokesman said it had taken the decision following a 27 per cent rise in electricity costs in the last five years.

Blaenau Gwent, Ceredigion, Powys, Pembrokeshire, Torfaen, Caerphilly, Newport and Carmarthenshire councils have also implemented switch-off schemes. However, Swansea has decided against a switch-off following objections from residents. Read More...

Ultraviolet lights used to tackle toad problem

Scientists in Australia have found the solution to an overwhelming cane toad problem – ultraviolet lights.

Researchers in Queensland have discovered that the females of the species, that have been plaguing large areas of the country, can be lured into traps with a combination of ultraviolet lights and the sound of the male toad call.

Numbers of the toads caught in traps have increased tenfold since the discovery.

Get sockets and switches checked, warns expert

A warning has been issued to householders in Bristol to check that their electrical appliances and sockets and switches are safe.

One person a week dies in the UK as a result of an electrical accident in the home and one person in eight has had a serious electrical shock.

Yet Danny Hancock, of Bristol-based firm Optus Electrical, says that many continue to put themselves at risk because their home electrics are outdated.

He states that 30-40,000 homes in Bristol do not have adequate RCD (residual current device) protection.

RCD fuse boxes can save lives by protecting against electrical shocks and lowering the risk of electrical fires.

"We all use electrical appliances daily and it's natural to want to solve simple electrical faults, but please get your electrical system professionally checked,” Mr Hancock says.

For safety around the home, don't use any appliances, lighting and switches that are faulty or visibly damaged.”

Mortgageloan.com’s Kirk Haverkamp says there are a number of inexpensive changes that vendors can make to their homes, including fitting new ceiling lights.

Mr Haverkamp says: "If you're going to try to increase the value of your home, you want to choose home improvement projects that provide a good return on your investment.

“One relatively cheap improvement consumers could opt for is to install new ceiling lights which can make a big impact to the look of a home and help make it appear instantly more modern.

LEDs for vending machines in Japan

The Coca-Cola Co in Japan will be using LED lighting in its new vending machines from next year.

The company says its annual power consumption for vending machines has already been reduced by 66 per cent in the last ten years and that it is now anticipating further reductions with the introduction of LEDs.

LED demand increases after earthquake

Lighting specialists in Japan are in a race to respond to increased demand for LED products following the earthquake and tsunami in March.

Electricity-saving restrictions imposed as a result of the earthquake have led to huge demand for LED options, with manufacturers working to expand their selection of products.

In August, Hitachi Appliances Inc. introduced the company's first LED ceiling light which will go on the market in October. LEDs accounted for just 3 percent of the ceiling light market before the quake but this has now increased to 15 percent.

Outdoor lighting specialist opens first UK office

Outdoor lighting specialist Ligman has opened its first office in the UK.

The company, which already has operations in the US, Netherlands, Spain, India, South Africa and Thailand, has opened an office in Birmingham.

Ligman has also established a warehouse and distribution partnership with Mini Clipper in Buckinghamshire.

Slug causes traffic lights to fail

Traffic was brought to a standstill by a slug when it crawled into a traffic light and shorted the circuit board.

Council engineers were called to a busy junction in Darlington, County Durham, when the lights failed last week.

When they opened the control box in Whinfield Road, engineers discovered the dead slug.

Councillor Chris McEwan said: "Somehow the slug managed to infiltrate the control mechanism, sit on the circuit board and then it got fried.

"We don't know how long the slug had been there.

"Unfortunately, it was dead by the time we found it, so we were unable to question it.

"Sadly, you just can't legislate for a rogue slug trying to take out Darlington's traffic system." Read More...

Lighting to be moved as part of motorway improvements

Work has started on J9.5m improvements on the M62 which involve lighting being moved from the central reservation to the verges.

The safety improvement scheme, which also includes safety barriers being installed, is taking place at the Croft Interchange, near Warrington, in Cheshire.

The work, expected to take six months, will take place between junctions 9 and 10.

Matt Sweeting, the Highways Agency's regional asset delivery manager, said, "This is a significant investment in this key part of the local motorway network which will improve safety, reduce maintenance visits and associated disruption for drivers and deliver safer, smoother and more reliable journeys for commuters and other users of the motorway." U-turn on switch-off plan

Oxfordshire County Council has done a U-turn on plans to switch off thousands of street lights.

The decision to reverse the switch-off move was made following a discovery that electricity tariff changes would mean anticipated savings would not be achieved.

The plan would have meant that half the county’s streetlights would have been switched off between 12.30am and 5.30am.
Council spokesman Paul Smith said: “The proposed changes to the way councils will be charged by energy providers will have a negligible effect on overall budgets as the charges for peak times have been raised.

“These will be offset by the new lower rates for lighting during off peak periods.”

The council had hoped to save J350,000 by switching off 28,000 streetlights. Read More...

Welsh move for LED Roadway Lighting

An energy-efficient lighting company has come to an agreement with Sony to do some of its manufacturing in Wales.

LED Roadway Lighting Ltd has set up a manufacturing line at a Sony-owned facility in the Welsh town of Pencoed.

Production will start next month, with 50 people being employed at the plant,

LED lamp market ‘to slow due to efficiency’

Recent research has predicted that LEDs will represent 40 per cent of the lamp market in two years time but that sales will decrease by 2018.

The report, by the US consultancy IMS research, predicts that, due to the long life and efficiency of LEDs, the LED market will shrink as more are installed.

The research states that the growth rate for LED lamp shipments from 2009-2015 is likely to be 97 per cent but that it will slow to 13 per cent from 2015 to 2020.

A Russian company has developed a small, portable hotel room where rail station and airport visitors can take naps and use electrical sockets to charge their mobile devices.

Arch Group is to release the Sleepbox, which measures just two-and-a-half by one-and-a-half metres at its base.

The 3m tall Sleepbox offers the essentials for the modern day traveler, including electrical sockets, LED lamps for reading, two bunk beds and a small table that pops out of the wall.

With energy bills forever on the rise and 20 per cent of the typical energy usage being taken up by illuminating the home, it is sensible to look at ways of reducing your lighting costs.

Firstly make sure you pick energy-efficient bulbs. Low-energy bulbs can last ten times as long as traditional ones and save up to 75 per cent on energy costs.

Turn off the lights when you leave a room. The exception to this rule is if you are using fluorescent bulbs and you plan to return within a few minutes as frequent turning on and off can reduce their lifespan.

If there is a need to leave a light on but not continuously, consider installing a timer. Then you will never have to worry about remembering to turn out the lights.

Installing dimmer switches not only lets you control the mood in any room but it can also save cash and extend the life of the bulb. However, make sure that your bulbs are intended for use with a dimmer switch.

An energy-saving lighting specialist has provided lighting to illuminate the National September 11 Memorial in New York.

Acuity Brands has provided specialist lighting from its manufacturing division Winona Lighting for the Memorial, which features twin reflecting pools in the area where twin towers once stood.

Lighting for the pools is provided by 1500 ft of Winline 607 LED submersible lights and the Names Parapet, a short wall around the pool where the names of approximately 3,000 victims are recorded, is lit by Winline 203W surface linear lights.

Tripoli prisoner spoke to fellow captives through electrical sockets

A former US navy war veteran imprisoned in Libya recently managed to communicate with fellow captives through electrical wall sockets.

Richard Peters, a former US Navy SEAL turned contractor, whispered back and forth through the electrical sockets to fellow prisoners on either side of his Tripoli cell.

Peters said he conversed about God with a Spanish prisoner he named Johnny Bravo on one side of his cell and two journalists on the other.

Low-energy lighting as Emmy Awards make cutbacks

A national move in the United States to save on energy by using low-energy lighting has even extended to a lavish red-carpet event in Los Angeles.

LED lighting is being used to illuminate the red carpet area at the Primetime Emmy Awards, which reward excellence in TV programming

FOX has teamed up with Kinetic Lighting to provide Prism Projection RevEAL Studio LED lighting fixtures for the event.

The new lighting will mean that just 20 percent of the power traditionally used for red carpet arrivals will be needed.

This year's red carpet is made from 25,000 square feet of recycled carpet and will be donated after the awards to the Ronald McDonald House Long Beach and to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles.

Grant to help businesses invest in timer switches and low-energy lighting

Businesses in Richmond are being offered grants to pay for low energy lighting equipment, including timer switches and LED lights.

The new utility bill grant of up to J1,000 is available to small and medium-sized businesses to help them cut down on energy costs.

The Business Energy Efficiency Fund is part of a number of support measures for local companies.

Council criticised over lights switch-off move

A council has been criticised by lighting experts for leaving its own headquarters floodlit whilst it switches off street lighting.

Northamptonshire County Council is in the process of switching off 33,000 street lights to save J2 million a year and has undergone criticism for leaving its own headquarters floodlit.

Now the attacks have been backed by the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP), which represents workers in the UK lighting industry.

ILP member Nigel Parry told Lighting Magazine: “The example of the council’s floodlit building and car park just indicates that the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.

“The cost of a few floodlights to illuminate County Hall will not make any difference to the J2 million savings but the county could have looked at switching off these less critical locations before considering the routes that young people use to walk home a night.”

He added that the council should consider dimming street lights during the night rather than switching them off altogether.

He said: “We would remind authorities looking at switching off their street lights that the road lighting was initially installed for good reason and that switching them off is very likely to have implications.” Read More...
