China gets a green medal

Chinese authorities have spent $17 billion (£8.8 billion) on energy efficient and green measures in the country's Olympic venues, ahead of the Beijing games.
The money has been spent on the use of renewable energy, energy efficient lighting and rainwater recycling methods Energy Efficiency News.com reports.

During the Olympics, China will use a wide variety of renewable energy and energy efficiency sources. Over a quarter of all the energy used at Olympic venues will come from sources including solar power and wind power, according to Renewable Energy World.

According to a report from the United Nations Environment Programme, Chinese authorities have installed solar-powered lighting in several venues, as well as putting in a 130 KW photovoltaic system to light the National Stadium.

Olympic venues are also being powered by renewable wind energy, with 20 per cent of the power needed to be sourced in this way.

Water efficiency is also on the Chinese agenda, with reclaimed water being used for heating and cooling in the athletes Olympic Village and a rainwater recycling system at the Bird's Nest stadium.

The Chinese government is aiming to cut energy consumption per unit of GDP per year by four per cent.
