JC Penney goes green with renewable energy plans
Released 14 August 2008
American retailer JCPenney announced renewable energy plans today which it hopes will provide electricity for ten of its stores in California and New Jersey.
Rooftop solar power installations for the ten stores are expected to be completed in November, which the company hopes will bring lower energy costs.
The ten stores will also have energy efficient lighting installed which could reduce their energy consumption.
JCPenney has also teamed up with Broadstar Wind Systems to install wind turbines at JCPenney's 1.6 million square foot distribution centre in Reno, Nevada.
Jim Thomas, vice president and director of corporate social responsibility for JCPenney, said: "These projects further our commitment to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of our operations."
The retailer also hopes to obtain Energy Star certification for at least 200 of its 1,150 stores across the US by 2011.
Energy Star certification is awarded to companies, homes and businesses who increase energy efficiency in buildings, and to get it JC Penney stores must "achieve an energy efficiency rating in the top quartile while maintaining appropriate levels of comfort and air quality."
